Sacred Heart Jazz Band Brings Joy to Oaklea Hall

On Thursday, 6 August, Sacred Heart College's Jazz Band delighted residents at Oaklea Hall with a wonderful afternoon of live music. The students performed a selection of beautiful jazz tunes, creating a warm and uplifting atmosphere that was enjoyed by everyone in attendance. The performance was met with enthusiastic applause, with many Oaklea Hall residents praising the students' talent and even calling for an encore! This visit is a wonderful example of Sacred Heart College's commitment to its Justice initiatives, providing opportunities for students to connect with and support some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Through sharing their musical talents, the Jazz Band not only entertained but also brought joy, companionship and a sense of community to the residents. We congratulate our talented musicians for representing the College with such excellence, generosity, and compassion. Hearts that listen, Hearts that Act.

FIRE Carrier Leader Day

We had a fantastic day at Avila College participating in the FIRE Carrier Leader Day on 4 August. FIRE stands for Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education.

The day was facilitated by the Opening the Doors Foundation, with Lisa Molony leading the program alongside Uncle Lional and his daughter, who delivered engaging and meaningful cultural workshops.

Our six students represented Sacred Heart with pride and enthusiasm. They included our Year 7 students, Melina (First Nations Student) and Amelia (Social Justice Leader), along with our Year 10 students, Monica, Aaliyah, Koyuki and Shari. They were outstanding ambassadors for our College throughout the day.

During the program, Lisa gave Sacred Heart a special mention as one of the leading Fire Carrier schools, acknowledging and thanking our community for the significant work we are doing to support First Nations students and promote reconciliation. It was also wonderful to see such strong engagement from across the sector, with close to 15 schools attending the event.

The day has inspired us to continue building on this important work. One of the key initiatives requested of all Fire Carrier schools is the development of a College Covenant, and we are excited to share that now that we have drafted ours. We look forward to presenting it to the College Leadership Team in the near future.

We are also excited that the plaque for our Indigenous Garden, located near Bunjil, will soon be installed, providing another visible reminder of our ongoing commitment to truth-telling, reconciliation and walking alongside First Nations peoples.

Vinnies Winter Sleepout

On Friday 7 August, 88 Year 11 students and 8 teachers volunteered their Friday evening and Saturday morning by participating in the annual St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleepout. It was an inspiring evening including meaningful engagement by students and teachers on and surrounding the issues of Homelessness, guest speakers from Vinnies Soup Van and Jordanville Vinnies Conference, empathy inspired activities in the courtyard, creative design of storage bags that will be donated and a viewing of the film The Pursuit of Happiness. Year 11 Food tech students made delicious soup for dinner which was combined with sandwiches brought by Mary from Vinnies Soup Van. A big thank you to all teachers and students involved, this event truly exemplified our school theme in 2026, Hearts that Listen, Hands that Act. The grand total of funds raised is $1,720. Congratulations to Year 11, a huge effort by all!

We are continuing to collect blankets, beanies, scarves, gloves and toiletries, please donate these items to the tubs in Year level areas.
