Earlier this year, students from the Environmental Action Group repurposed and decorated empty tissue boxes and distributed them into each homeroom to be used for the collection of stationery that had run out or was no longer wanted. The stationery from these boxes was recently collected and it amounted to an amazing 377 items. When the stationery from staff and the science labs were added it filled a paper shopping bag. These will now be taken to Officeworks for recycling. What a great effort by the SHGC community - these items were all otherwise destined for landfill. Thanks to Ms Rivans for her assistance in making the decorative slips for the boxes.
In other news, we have started the process of gaining certification for sustainability through Resource Smart Schools, a program managed by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action. We will be starting with the Core Module which helps schools understand what sustainability actions they currently undertake and what they can do to improve their sustainability efforts.
