Growing Readers and Thinkers
We have had a variety of displays and activities including celebrating Mother’s Day, Reconciliation Week and popular author, Rick Riordan’s birthday. Book Club has gathered each Day 10. Other popular activities have been the challenging Melbourne puzzle and a competition.
In our Year 7-9 Wide Reading lessons, students have been focusing on Information fluency by exploring the various resources available via the Student Resources Library link on Simon which has enabled the students to either begin or build on their information literacy and critical thinking skills.
The Library staff have been evaluating and acting on its collection development policy by adding, replacing and rejuvenating the fiction collection. One area in particular has been the Quick Reads collection as we have purchased a variety of high interest shorter reads in the effort to make our reading for leisure books accessible for all abilities of reading. We enlisted a Year 8 Wide Reading class to help us select books that will be of interest, and these books are beginning to hit the shelves with more available to loan early Term 3.
The Year 12 Peer tutoring program has been taking place in the Library every Tuesday and Thursday after school adding to the hive of activity that takes place each afternoon. We have seen a pleasing number of students making the most of the new extended hours.
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is in full swing with over 140 students participating this year. It isn’t too late to register, and we are celebrating each student that completes the Challenge in the Library.
Please email Mrs. Bird or come into the Library for registrations.
