During Week 2, Year 12 Geography students headed to Burwood Brickworks to bring their Unit 3 study of land use change to life. Once a disused industrial site, the area has been transformed into a vibrant mixed-use residential and retail precinct, providing an ideal case study for students.
Framed by the research question, “To what extent did the development of Burwood Brickworks create a 20-minute neighbourhood?”, students took on the role of geographers in the field. They collected primary data on the range of services and facilities available, while also surveying local residents to gain insights into perceptions of liveability.
The excursion offered a valuable opportunity for students to move beyond the classroom and engage directly with a real-world example of urban renewal land use change. It was particularly pleasing to see students interacting with members of the public and applying their knowledge in a practical setting.
