Year 7 Science students have begun the year with great enthusiasm as they develop their understanding of laboratory safety and scientific practices. A key focus during the opening weeks has been learning how to safely operate gas taps and Bunsen burners. Students have been practising correct procedures, identifying potential hazards and demonstrating responsible behaviour in the laboratory. These skills are essential foundations for practical science, and students are currently working towards earning their Bunsen Burner Licence. This milestone recognises their ability to work safely and confidently during practical experiments.
Year 11 Biology
Year 11 Biology students have been exploring the concept of osmosis through a hands-on investigation using potato samples placed in salt solutions of varying concentrations. By carefully measuring the mass of the potato samples before and after soaking, students were able to observe how water moves into or out of cells depending on the concentration of the surrounding solution. This experiment allowed students to connect theoretical knowledge about cell membranes and diffusion with real experimental data, strengthening their understanding of how cells interact with their environment.
Year 12 Physics
The Year 12 Physics class recently attended an exciting excursion to Luna Park Melbourne on Wednesday 4 March. During the visit, students applied their understanding of motion by collecting real-world data while experiencing a range of rides. They recorded and analysed aspects of motion such as speed, velocity and acceleration, linking their observations to the physics concepts studied in class. The data collected during the excursion will contribute to their upcoming SAC, providing students with a valuable opportunity to apply physics principles in a dynamic and engaging setting.
