Welcome Evenings

Years 10-12 Parents, Carers and Student Welcome Evening

On Thursday 5 February, the College welcomed Years 10-12 students with their parents/carers to the annual welcome evening. We were delighted to host Dr Michael Carr-Gregg OA, one of Australia’s highest profile psychologists, who shared invaluable advice regarding when not to get anxious about anxiety, how to study effectively by using information in new ways, teaching concepts to your pet and using applications such as Brainscape and Quizlet. Finally, the importance of maximising mental wellbeing during these years was emphasised, including the importance of eating breakfast, regular exercise, and the use of the application Three Good Things – A Happiness Journal. Many of us were heading home with the intention to munch on avocados, Greek yoghurt and blueberries, whilst aiming for a 65% reduction in stress by listening to Marconi Union’s Weightless! Concluding the evening with Homeroom teachers, students and families had a wonderful opportunity to learn more about how to create a balanced and fruitful educational experience during the senior years of schooling.

Years 8 and 9 Parents and Carers Welcome Evening

Wednesday 11 February was another valuable opportunity for parents and carers of our Years 8 and 9 students to make connections with Homeroom teachers and other key College staff. Our College Psychologist, Elizabeth Bensley, spoke with parents about the importance of sleep for adolescent brain development, emotional regulation, learning and physical health.

Five habits to focus on for better sleep hygiene were:

  1. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule
  2. Creating a screen-free wind-down period before sleep
  3. Building a calming pre-bed routine
  4. Making the bedroom sleep friendly
  5. Limiting stimulating activities and substances in the evening

A summary of Elizabeth’s presentation can be located in the College documents in PAM.

The Year 8 Level Leader presented important information about the Wellbeing for Learning program, REACH engagement and learning protocols, attendance, organisation and study habits, whilst the Year 9 Level Leader also introduced families to the Resilience Project and STRIVE program.

We are grateful for all parents and carers who were able to attend these evenings, helping the school and families to work in partnership for the benefit of our young people.
