Servant Leadership
Last week, our Year 11 students gathered at Newman College, University of Melbourne, for their annual Retreat, centred on the theme "Servant Leadership." The day invited students to reflect on what it means to lead with humility, compassion and a commitment to serving others—values deeply rooted in the life and teachings of Jesus and the RNDM Charism.
A highlight of the retreat was hearing from inspiring guest speakers Sr Brigid Arthur CSB, founder of the Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project, and Judy Ryan OAM, whose lifelong commitment to justice and advocacy challenged students to consider how they can use their own gifts in service of others. Their stories demonstrated that meaningful leadership begins with compassion, courage and a willingness to take action.
The students' reflections captured the impact of the day. One student wrote:
Today I learnt that leadership is not about the loud actions we make and being at the top of the hierarchy, but small actions can really contribute and help others in our community.
Another reflected:
Being a leader isn't just about power; it's about being empathetic, kind and listening to everyone.
These insights highlight the central message of the retreat—that every person has the capacity to lead through service. Whether through social justice, kindness, advocacy or everyday acts of compassion, leadership begins by recognising the dignity of others and choosing to make a positive difference.
We thank Sr Brigid Arthur and Judy Ryan for generously sharing their wisdom and experiences, and congratulate our Year 11 Students for embracing the day with enthusiasm, openness and a genuine desire to grow as leaders who serve with heart.
