Always striving upwards

Faith & Mission - KidsView

In early June, 60 Sacred Heart students attended KidsView, a workshop hosted by Bahay Tuluyan Philippines Australia, a children's rights organisation based in the Philippines. They were friendly and talked to us about the impact of poverty in the Philippines. Children and young people who come to Bahay Tuluyan have often survived poverty and violence – some of these young people became the ambassadors who came to see us today!

The ambassadors shared stories and facts with us, using games and role play to help us understand the devastating impact of poverty and to see the world through their eyes. While these games were fun to play, we had to remember that what we were playing was equivalent to someone’s real life.

What we learned was a big eye-opener, as we realised how much we take for granted. Many people around the world, don’t have enough money to go to school or even have a house, and as for those who do have a house, some families have a land area as low as 6.4 square meters.

Bahay Tuluyan helps many kids, particularly those on the streets, by educating them on life skills such as how to make things to sell and provide for oneself, how to grow food and even for little kids, how to brush their teeth.

We have taken everything we’ve learnt to heart. We understand that we are so lucky to have families who have money to afford not only necessities, but also things that make our lives easier. To end, we have something that we hope you take with you today:

If you have a roof over your head, food in your fridge, and clothes in your wardrobe, you are richer than 70% of the world.
