From Reconciliation to preparing to give Hope a Home
Over the past two weeks, all RE classes at SHGC have taken part in a reflective 'Reconciliation and Advent' Liturgy. These simple, meaningful celebrations offered students a chance to pause, look back on the year and prepare their hearts for the season of Advent.
Each liturgy began with an Acknowledgement of Country, recognising the deep wisdom and care of the Traditional Custodians and inviting us to walk together in the spirit of reconciliation. Students then entered a quiet time of reflection, considering moments when they may have fallen short and where they can grow in kindness, welcome and compassion.
The Gospel story of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem reminded students of the importance of hospitality and of making room for others — a powerful message in this holy season. Through a thoughtful reflection and video, students explored who in our world today still seeks safety, welcome and hope.
Students then completed a class activity “Giving Hope a Home.” Each student wrote a personal commitment on a star-shaped card — a concrete, practical way they could bring hope to someone this Christmas. These stars now form a “Home of Hope” display at our end of year Mass, symbolising the collective goodwill of our students.
The liturgy concluded with prayers for our families, for those in need, and for our College community, followed by a closing blessing as we step into Advent with hearts ready to welcome Christ’s light.
May this season fill our homes and our community with peace, joy and hope.
