Year 11 PE Wheeltalk

On Wednesday 3 September the Year 11 Physical Education class took part in an incursion with WheelTalk. WheelTalk is an engaging and interactive program that promotes diversity, acceptance and disability, placing a primary focus on inclusion. This session became the introduction to Unit 2 AOS 2 where we investigate contemporary issues Australians face to participating in physical activity and sport.

Peter Ogunyemi shared his journey through life and sport. Sport had saved Ogunyemi’s life after he was born with polio, into poverty in a village in Nigeria. Peter shared the hard truths with the students and moments of success and happiness. He is a retired Paralympian and has competed nationally in powerlifting, basketball and AFL.

After sharing his story, we hit the basketball court. With 10 sport specific wheelchairs ready to be used the class became familiar with the wheelchairs through some light-hearted relays before jumping into a game of wheelchair basketball, 5 v 5 (with the addition of Peters help and fun). We played a round of 5 minutes and I was impressed with the increase in skill and confidence of the students in only one hour of playing the sport- they loved it! The teamwork continued as we all deconstructed the wheelchairs and helped Peter get them back into the trailer. A great session which taught us first-hand what experiencing sport might feel like with additional challenges to participation.
