Inside the Body and Inside the Atom: Science Learning Across Year Levels

Year 8 Science

Year 8 students have been exploring the structure and function of living systems, focusing on the circulatory, digestive and respiratory systems. Through practical learning experiences, students developed their understanding of how these systems work together to sustain life. A highlight of the unit was the heart dissection, where students examined internal structures and blood flow pathways. Students also observed the inflation of a lamb pluck, providing a clear demonstration of lung function and supporting connections between theory and real-life processes.

Year 11 Chemistry

Year 11 Chemistry students have been investigating covalent bonding and its relationship to the structure and properties of compounds in everyday life. Students explored how atoms share electrons to form molecules and how this affects properties such as shape, polarity and reactivity. To support their learning, students used atom building kits to construct models of different compounds, helping them visualise molecular geometry and bonding patterns. This interactive approach strengthened understanding of abstract concepts and highlighted the relevance of chemistry in real-world contexts.
