Wheelchair Basketball

Recently, our students had the exciting opportunity to participate in a wheelchair basketball incursion, providing a unique and meaningful learning experience within Unit 2 Physical Education studies. This hands-on session allowed students to step into the shoes of athletes who use wheelchairs, giving them a deeper understanding of the challenges and barriers people with disabilities face when accessing physical activity.

Throughout the incursion, students developed new skills as they learned how to manoeuvre a sports wheelchair, pass, shoot and work as a team in a completely different way. Many quickly realised that activities they often take for granted require significant strength, coordination and persistence when performed in a wheelchair. This helped build empathy and a greater appreciation for inclusivity in sport.

Importantly, the experience directly connected to course content, particularly around sociocultural factors and access to physical activity. Students were able to make real-world links between theory and practice, deepening their understanding of how factors such as environment, resources and support can influence participation in physical activity.

Overall, the incursion was highly engaging, with students thoroughly enjoying the challenge and novelty of the experience. It not only strengthened their learning but also promoted respect, awareness and inclusion key values we aim to foster in all of our students.
