Always striving upwards

Welcome to Country

'You are who you are, be proud of who you are, but you are no better than anyone else.' AUNTY JOY

On Friday 14 February, we had the privilege of having respected Wurundjeri elder, Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin, her son Craig and Ganga Giri, lead us through a Smoking Ceremony to celebrate the start of the school year and help us learn about traditional Indigenous practices and acknowledge the land on which we stand.

The school gathered outside as a community and listened to Aunty Joy reflect on her history as an Aboriginal woman and the future she wishes for Australia and Indigenous community. We then got to hear the digeridoo being played by Ganga Giri, as we all placed our gum leaves into the fire and smelt the smoke that helped us remember how important our connection to nature is and how we should learn from Indigenous communities about looking after and spending time with our land.

The Ceremony was such a beautiful experience that we got to spend together as a school community and helped us recognise how we should take time to reflect in nature and appreciate our world which we easily tend to forget during the busyness of our lives. We really believe it was such an eye opening and beneficial morning for Sacred Heart Girls College.

'Living on Indigenous Country, makes learning and listening about Aboriginal culture and heritage so special and intriguing. I am so grateful to have witnessed how the Indigenous people are so connected and involved with their land, it reminds us about how we should be respectful and reverent to their home. I really believe that our school loved being a part of this experience.'

'Seeing Craig follow through with the cultural customs like the natural body paint and the use of the clapping sticks really made my day. I am proud of my culture and love to learn about other cultures in the world. It was really cool to see some of the Aboriginal traditions in action.'

If we take from Country, it is important that we give back because there has been so much loss and devastation on Country that can never be replaced. But there is a future; there’s today, there’s tomorrow and for your children and then generations after you. AUNTY JOY
