This September, our school welcomed students from a high school in Italy,
Liceo Angela Veonese. For two weeks we had the pleasure of sharing our everyday
lives, culture and school with our new friends. Together we enjoyed a range of
activities, we shared a fun day out to Philip Island, where we saw spectacular
views and did a range of activities. The Italian students got the opportunity
to explore Melbourne’s city and get up close to Australian wildlife at
Healesville Sanctuary. When not on excursions the Italian students were able to
join us in class and experience what it’s like to be a part of an all-girls
Australian secondary school. Evenings and weekends were spent with host
families which gave everyone a chance to experience home life, try different
foods and practise both Italian and English language skills in casual settings.
The program did more than allow students to improve their language skills,
it encouraged cultural understanding, built new friendships that gave us
amazing memories that we will carry through life while giving us knowledge on
how education, family life and traditions differ between countries.
We can’t wait for next April, where we will be able to visit our Italian
friends.
