Year 7 and 8 Problem-Solving

In Term 2, and now continuing into Term 3, our Year 7 and 8 students began the Problem-Solving Program, aimed at developing their mathematical thinking through the APSMO Maths Games and Maths Olympiad competitions. These initiatives focus on real-world problem-solving, encouraging students to apply logic, strategy and creativity to unfamiliar challenges.

The Maths Games offer a non-competitive setting where students work through multi-step problems that build resilience and lateral thinking. In contrast, the Maths Olympiad is designed for high-achieving students who enjoy tackling advanced problems in a competitive environment.

Our students have enjoyed having their classes mixed each fortnight for these targeted sessions. They have already completed two test papers with great results and have two more competition papers to complete later this term.

Through this program, students are not only strengthening their understanding of mathematical concepts but also learning to connect these ideas to real-life contexts—an essential skill for lifelong learning.
