Wominjeka Centre

On Friday 21 June 2024, Sacred Heart Girls’ College launched its’ state-of-the-art Wominjeka Centre and enhanced College facilities. The College was joined by the Hon Clare O'Neil MP, Member for Hotham, who officially opened the Centre, and joined by Most Rev Anthony J Ireland DD STD, Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne, who blessed its new Centre.

Named after the Woiwurrung word meaning 'To come with purpose' or more commonly 'Welcome', the Wominjeka Centre symbolises Sacred Heart’s commitment to inclusivity and connection with the land of the Wurundjeri people, on whose traditional land Sacred Heart Girls’ College stands.

Mr Christopher Dalton, Principal, warmly welcomed the College guests and highlighted the significance of this milestone opening in the College’s 67-year history. “Today is another milestone in our journey to provide an excellent learning environment. These new facilities are not just buildings; they are a testament to our commitment to nurturing the minds and spirits of the young people in our care. Here we are creating spaces where young minds can flourish and grow,” stated Mr Dalton.

Designed by Williams Ross Architects and constructed by Newpol Construction, the Wominjeka Centre connects the College Administration Building and the Jubilee Building. On the ground floor, purposefully designed spaces house Learning Diversity, the Counselling service along with Community Relations, Sport and Outdoor Education. These new facilities have provided additional space and connection with the existing buildings. The second and third levels comprise flexible classrooms and open learning spaces that will be suitable for multiple uses and encourage collaborative learning and teaching experiences.

The garden area to the south of the Wominjeka Centre is beautifully landscaped to create an Indigenous Garden, featuring a range of locally unique plants that have naturally evolved in our country over thousands of years. In addition, new recreation space is added, further enriching the College's environment.

The launch of the Wominjeka Centre marks a significant step forward for Sacred Heart Girls’ College in providing innovative educational facilities while honouring the cultural heritage of its surroundings.
